Terms of use

The rules for using Elmtale, written plainly. By creating an account you agree to them.

What Elmtale does

Elmtale arranges phone conversations between an AI interviewer called Grace and someone you love (the storyteller). After each conversation you receive the stories they told, a draft chapter and short clips of their voice.

Grace is an AI

Grace is a computer program, not a person, and she says so at the start of every conversation. She can misunderstand or misspell things, so drafts may contain mistakes in names, places and dates. Check anything that matters with your family.

The storyteller agrees first

  • Only arrange calls for someone who can decide for themselves, and only with a phone number you are allowed to give us.
  • When you set up the calls, you confirm the storyteller knows about them and agrees. At the start of the first call Grace explains who she is and asks if they would like to go on; if they say no, she does not call again.
  • Grace asks before recording each call. The storyteller can say no, take a break or stop at any time.
  • Grace is not a service for emergencies, medical, legal or financial advice.

Your account

Keep your details accurate and your password to yourself. You are responsible for what is done with your account. We may close an account that is used to call people without their agreement or to harass anyone.

Payment

Packages are paid in advance. Payments are handled by Stripe; we never see or store your card number. A conversation that Grace cannot hold because nobody answered uses none of your package’s time. If the storyteller says no when Grace asks at the start of the first call, before any conversation has taken place, we refund your order in full; you do not need to ask. If they stop after that, before all conversations are used, contact us about a refund for the conversations that did not happen.

The stories

The stories belong to the storyteller and your family. You allow us to record, transcribe and write them up only to provide the service to you. You can ask us to delete them at any time (see the privacy notice).

Changes and ending

We may update these terms and will email you before a change that affects you takes effect. You can stop using Elmtale and ask us to close your account at any time.
